MUSIC CERTIFICATE PROGRAM

For advancing students, the study of music theory and musicianship skills becomes essential to their continued progress. The Music Certificate Program supplements the weekly lesson by including a music theory/musicianship class that corresponds to the student's level of music understanding. At the end of the year, students must pass a written theory exam and participate in a performance exam before a team of CMS faculty. The performance exam tests the technique and repertoire studied in lessons. Students are further required to perform in two student recitals during the year. Tuition for the Music Certificate Program includes the cost of weekly private instruction, the required theory/musicianship class, performance in two recitals, the year-end performance exam and a written progress report. Students also have the option of enrolling in a free 9-week Music Enrichment class.

HONORS CERTIFICATE PROGRAM

The Honors Certificate Program is designed to develop the highly motivated intermediate to advanced level student with a curriculum that emphasizes performance. Building on the Music Certificate Program, the Honors Certificate Program requires ensemble participation that will further enhance the learning experience and prepare students for possible entrance to music schools or conservatories. Students in the Honors Certificate Program are required to take a minimum 45-minute lesson each week, participate year-round in an ensemble, and successfully complete a theory/musicianship course. Honors Certificate students must also take a performance exam before a committee of CMS faculty at the end of the year. Because listening to others perform is a vital component to a well-rounded music education, Honors Certificate students are expected to attend at least two professional concert performances per year - either at CMS or elsewhere. In addition to meeting all ensemble performance requirements, students in the Honors Certificate Program must solo in at least two student recitals per year. Graduating high school seniors are further required to present a 30-minute solo recital. (Requirements may vary depending on the instrument.) Tuition for the Honors Certificate Program includes all of the above, unlimited recital participation, and an optional 9-week Music Enrichment Class. To be considered for the Honors Certificate Program, students must receive written recommendation from their current teacher and audition before a committee of CMS faculty.
