Étude Program
Étude: A study or lesson, primarily for the development of technique.
Community Music School offers a school band program providing instrumental
instruction for students in area private and parochial schools. CMS is pleased
to offer the Étude Program to students in grades 3 and above. Through the Étude
program students are able to take Private, Partner or Small Group Instruction
on the instrument of their choice. All lessons are scheduled for 30 minutes
each week and are taught by members of the CMS faculty who visit the
participating schools.
Recruitment assemblies, presented in September, will introduce the available
instruments to the children. Choosing the appropriate musical instrument can
sometimes be a difficult decision and CMS is happy to assist you and your
child.
Instruments available through the Étude Program include: Baritone, Trumpet,
Trombone, French Horn, Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, and Percussion. Instruction
for string instruments is available at select schools. Instruction on all other
instruments is available at CMS.
LESSON SCHEDULES: Students are excused from their regular classes to attend
their weekly instrumental lesson. Lessons are typically scheduled on a rotating
basis so that students do not continuously miss the same class. Each student
will receive a printed lesson schedule which will be updated periodically.
Parents should keep track of lesson dates and times and make sure children
bring their instrument to school when necessary.
Depending upon the school calendar, students will receive approximately 28-30
lessons per year. CMS will not be able to reschedule lessons that are cancelled
due to school field trips, assemblies, or any other special school activity.
ATTENDANCE: It is the student's responsibility to get to his/her lesson on the
correct day and at the correct time. Classroom teachers will not be able to
remind students. Lessons that are cancelled due to unforeseen school closings
or because of a CMS teacher absence will be rescheduled. Lessons will not be
scheduled when the school is closed.
SCHOOL ASSEMBLIES: Performances are generally scheduled in winter and spring and
all Étude Program students are expected to participate. Parents are notified in
advance of all musical assemblies and are invited to attend.
MUSIC BOOKS AND OTHER SUPPLIES: CMS provides one lesson book per year at no
additional charge. Other expenses may include the occasional replacement of
reeds, valve oil, etc. which teachers will supply at a nominal cost.
INSTRUMENTS: Parents are responsible for providing the child's instrument.
Instrument dealers are listed in the Yellow Pages or CMS can provide a list of
reputable companies.
FEES:
Registration: $25 per student ($40 maximum per family)
Current students who wish to enroll in the Etude program are required to submit
a completed registration form no later than August 15 along with the annual,
non-refundable registration fee. An additional $10 fee applies to all current
students who register after August 15.
New students must register by October 1. Late registrants - those registering
after October 1 - must pay an additional $10.
Small Group Instruction: $420 per year (Billed quarterly)
This option is available for first year students only. While group instruction
is an excellent means of introducing beginning students to instrumental music
instruction, we believe it should not be viewed as the student's only
continuous source of instrumental instruction.
Students who are beyond the first year of instruction can choose one of the
following two options:
Partner Lessons: $465 per year (Billed quarterly)
CMS will put two students of the same instrument and performance level in a
shared 30-minute lesson. This will give your child increased one-on-one time
with the instructor and will ultimately lead to faster progress.
Private Lessons: $690 per year (Billed quarterly)
CMS is pleased to offer private instruction to students beyond the first year of
group instrumental instruction. A Community Music School faculty will travel to
your child's school to provide a weekly 30-minute private lesson specially
tailored to meet your child's needs.
Band Only: $100 per year
Students who take private instrumental lessons outside of the school are
encouraged to be a part of their school band for the nominal fee of $75 per
year plus the usual registration fees. These students must contact the music
instructor to arrange for a placement audition. Full payment is expected at the
time of registration.
Payment of Tuition and Fees:
Your first payment is due at the time of registration. Tuition for the Etude
Program can be paid in quarterly installments. Invoices for the balance of the
tuition will be mailed to you. CMS accepts checks, money orders, Visa or Master
Card for the payment of tuition and fees. If paying by check, please make your
check payable to CMS.
Late Payment Fee:
A late payment fee of $15 will be added to any account that is two weeks past
due. Students whose accounts are 30 days in arrears will be asked to
discountinue lessons until payment is made. Any student whose account is past
due will not be allowed to perform in school concerts.
