Music Enrichment Classes

Community Music School offers a variety of supplemental music classes and ensembles to enhance the music learning experience. All enrichment classes and ensembles may be taken alone or in addition to private a lesson. Each class and ensemble meets for a nine-week quarter. Students who are enrolled in private instruction at the CMS may take one full nine-week session per year of any of the classes or ensembles listed below at no charge.

Music Enrichment classes are supported in part by the Theodore Presser Foundation.

CHAMBER ENSEMBLES
Playing with other musicians in a small ensemble is one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences a musician can have. CMS invites students at intermediate to advanced levels in all instrument areas to consider joining an ensemble. A CMS faculty member will coach chamber ensembles. All ensembles work towards a performance goal. Each member’s participation is crucial to the success of the ensemble; therefore, every player is required to participate in the final performance. Performances can be at one of our student recitals, for a community organization or a special event.

CLASSES
The study of music is far more than just learning how to play an instrument. It includes the study of history, musical styles and forms, music theory, and more. CMS offers a variety of classes to anyone interested in learning more about music.

The music theory curriculum at CMS is based on the Associated Board of the Royal School of Music’s Music Theory in Practice series written by Eric Taylor. All theory courses are cumulative and require the knowledge of the previous course. Students must pass the exam at each level to be able to enroll in the next level.

Theory and introductory courses are scheduled on an as-needed basis. Students interested in enrolling in one of these courses should contact the office to discuss possible class times. All class schedules are subject to change.
