Quarter Two 2005-2006
Dear Community Music School Community:
We've all watched the news reports and seen the devastation and human suffering
caused by the Tsunami, hurricanes Katrina and Rita, and the earthquake in
Pakistan. These disasters will undoubtedly have a profound effect on global and
national economies for years to come and will even trickle down to our local
economies. Unfortunately, some of the first organizations to realize this will
be the numerous non-profit organizations that provide a vast array of services
to the region.
In just the past week, CMS was notified by three of its funders that they are
suspending support of local organizations during the next year in order to
redirect their efforts towards the relief of victims affected by the
hurricanes. Many of our local corporations are taking the same stand. In our
hearts, we understand why this is important. After all, these people lost their
homes and their jobs. They lost family members.
But is it wise to completely suspend the support of those local organizations
that add so much to our lives and make our communities an enjoyable place to
live? Organizations like CMS continue to do their good work no matter what
happens in other parts of the world. We continue to be dependant on the support
of foundations, local businesses and corporations and even the very families we
serve.
This is an important year for CMS. We've made a huge commitment to build a new
facility that will benefit not just CMS students but the community as a whole.
We still need to raise $700,000 for our building campaign. At the same time, we
must raise another $59,000 just to meet our annual operating expenses.
There are many ways to help support Community Music School. Simply by signing
up with the eScrip Program, every day shopping for household needs becomes a
fundraising event for CMS. And instead of throwing empty ink cartridges away,
bring them to your lessons and drop them off in the lobby. Through the Empties
for Cash program, you will be supporting our cause. Also, the most important
thing our families can do for CMS is to simply - spread the word! Tell your
friends and families about us.
For many of us, the end of the year is a time to take stock of our finances and
to make one last contribution to the organizations that have made a positive
impact on our lives. Now, more than ever, CMS needs your support. When you
receive your annual fund appeal in the mail, please give what you can.
Sincerely,
Edwina French
This year marks the 5th year of Community Music School's Greater Philadelphia
Honors Orchestra, conducted by CMS faculty member, Ian Shafer. In honor of the
250th year of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's birth, GPHO will be presenting an All
Mozart Program!
The Greater Philadelphia Honors Orchestra is comprised of the area's most
advanced students seeking an opportunity to play masterworks at a very high
level. Of particular note, this year's festival has been expanded from the
usual one weekend event to a full two-weekend extravaganza! Rehearsals will
begin on March 31st, 2006 and culminate in a performance on Sunday, April 9th.
As usual, the orchestra will honor one exceptional student with the
presentation of a concerto. However, because Mozart was primarily a pianist,
this year's concerto competition will be limited to pianists. The selected work
is the Piano Concerto No. 21 in C Major K. 467. Students may audition on any of
the three movements. Auditions for the piano concerto will take place on
Friday, January 20th, 2005 from 6:30-9:00PM at CMS. For more information please
contact Ian Shafer at ian.shafer@gmail.com .
Do you love music? Did you miss out on the opportunity to learn a musical
instrument when you were a child? Are you kicking yourself for quitting music
lessons all those years ago? Are you looking for a fun, creative way to spend
time with other adults who enjoy music?
The New Horizons Band ® is an entry level band for adults who have never before
played a musical instrument, or for those who haven't played in years. Each
week, participants get together for a group instrumental lesson and then a full
band rehearsal under the direction of Dr. Adam Gaines.
Community Music School invites all those interested in becoming part of this
exciting band program for adults to come to a rehearsal. We meet on Thursdays
at 10 AM and rehearsals last approximately two hours. It's never too late to
play again!

She was selected as one of only ten students to be a member of the Hopkins
Symphony Orchestra, which is composed mainly of professors at the university
and the affiliated Peabody Institute. Lauren is also a member of the Pep Band,
the Choral Society and the ECCOs, a female a cappella group. Way to go, Lauren
